Y Type Strainer
Y type strainer is an essential pipeline filtration device shaped like the letter Y, widely installed upstream of valves, pumps, meters and precision fluid equipment to trap solid impurities suspended in liquid or gas medium. It protects downstream components from scratch, clogging and abrasion caused by sand, rust scale, welding slag, debris and other particulate contaminants.
Its distinctive Y-shaped layout consists of a straight main flow channel and an inclined branch port for holding the filter screen. Under normal working conditions, medium flows straight through the main body, while solid particles are intercepted and collected inside the mesh basket housed in the angled Y leg. This structural design minimizes flow resistance and pressure drop compared with basket strainers, making it suitable for continuous circulation pipelines with steady flow demand.
The internal filter screen is available in multiple mesh sizes ranging from coarse to fine according to filtration precision requirements. Common screen materials include stainless steel 304 and 316, with optional perforated metal reinforcement for heavy impurity loads. The bottom of the Y branch is equipped with a removable blind cover sealed by gaskets. Operators can unscrew the cover to take out the screen, rinse away accumulated sediment and reinstall the component quickly, without removing the entire strainer from the pipeline or cutting off long sections of piping.
Valve bodies are manufactured from cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel or stainless steel to match different working environments. Sealing gaskets adopt EPDM, PTFE or metal spiral wound gaskets, adapting to cold water, hot water, oil, steam, weak acid and alkali fluids. Standard connection types cover flange, threaded and grooved ends, covering nominal diameters DN15 to DN300 with pressure grades PN10, PN16, PN25 and Class 150.
Installation has clear directional rules: the arrow marked on the strainer body must align with the medium flow direction. It can be mounted horizontally or vertically, yet the inclined Y branch should face downward to facilitate impurity deposition and easy cleaning. For systems carrying a large volume of solid waste, two Y strainers can be arranged in parallel to realize uninterrupted operation during screen maintenance.
Compared with other filtering equipment, Y type strainers feature compact size, light weight and low cost. The smooth straight-through passage reduces energy consumption of conveying pumps. It requires only simple routine cleaning and has few vulnerable spare parts, lowering long-term operation and maintenance costs. It also works well for both liquid and gaseous media, covering a broad range of industrial and civil applications.
